InTASC Standard 9: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice
The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner (InTASC, 2013).
Brief description of evidence
In the Fall semester of 2020 in my EDUC 210, Technology in Education class, I participated in multiple online teacher trainings. The first one was a Google course for teachers that discusses the importance of teaching internet safety to students and the different topics that need to be covered, it actually inspired me to create a virtual escape room about internet safety. The second was another Google training, this time focusing on ways for teachers to improve their distance teaching strategies. Finally, we did a training presented by Matt Miller, author of Ditch That Homework and Ditch That Textbook, about remote learning and different ways to teach your students effectively and the different technology tools to use.
Analysis of what I learned
Each of these training sessions taught me a lot. In the training for internet safety, I learned about creating stronger passwords both for myself and my students, how important it is for teens to pay attention and report any type of cyberbullying, and how they can keep the internet safe and clean for everyone. In the second, training about distance learning, I explored different ways to use Google tools like classroom and meet to work with my students, their families, and my coworkers on a deeper level by communicating faster, allowing them easy access to assignments and rubrics, and organizing my classes and groups to keep the online design clean and easy to navigate. Lastly, in the remote learning class, I learned about how to use multiple different strategies to effectively teach my students about any topic such as lecturing, hands-on activities, and read-alouds to change up my strategies. In that portion of the videos, Matt Miller said “The best chefs pick and choose the spices that will fit best with the dish” this resonated with me a lot. As I am studying special education, I am learning about Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences, like visual-spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, and linguistic-verbal (Northern Illinois University, nd). All these types of learning need to be addressed by a teacher so that students have multiple opportunities to understand the lesson. Having a list of different teaching strategies to choose from is a great way to help other teachers that do not quite grasp the idea of Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences yet.
How this artifact demonstrates my competence on the InTASC standard
This artifact demonstrates my competence in InTASC standard 9, professional learning and ethical practice because these trainings are one of the many ways that a teacher can show that they are continuing their learning and renew their license when the time comes. Continually learning new ways of teaching allows the teacher to take this knowledge and reflect and evaluate their techniques over and over to create the best possible learning environment for their students. It is important that teachers know how their choices and their education will affect their students not only educationally but also physically, mentally, and emotionally. These trainings are a great way for teachers to learn about new teaching techniques, evaluate their teaching practices, adapt their practices to meet the needs of their students, and reflect on how their choice to participate in training affects their students.
